Attractive and historic building and courteous staff

    Wine list short of choice

excellent location, food good, service good good price and value large rooms

musty smell in room windows dirty and not opened to freshen the room before arrival bathroom looked unhealthy because of dirty old grouting

Lovely garden and interesting hotel building. Clean comfortable room. Good food in informal bar setting. Positive small hotel feel. Good value. Very convenient for visiting my mother and I will stay again.

The dinner/ breakfast waiting staff were very pleasant but there were not enough of them. The shower was rather poor and the bed counterpane was a little shabby ie. ripped.

Enjoyed the stunning grounds and the historic features of the building, lovely bistro area and pleasant food.

Now chain owned showed signs of lack of care and neglect, noisy pump in bathroom, dirty coffee tray, ornaments with multiple breakages, wallpaper tired and peeling, knobs missing from bath fittings. A far cry from the beautiful privately owned hotel we visited on our honeymoon 20 years ago. Still I guess that's reflected in the price, £80 in 1991, and £45 in 2010!

We stayed at the Cornwallis Hotel for 3 nights & found the staff very helpful & pleasant. The rooms are beautiful & very comfortable. Breakfast was good and we did have our evening meals in the restaurant which were excellent, only one criticism regarding the evening menu - after 3 nights the menu was a bit repetitive & needs to have more variety. Will certainly stay again.

The hotel was grubby the windows were broken in the bedroom. The carpets were badly stained in the restaurant area. the reception area was very untidy. The bed in our double room was barely bigger than a single bed and the shower curtain was soiled with mildew.

Hotel is in a great countryside setting. Staff are friendly and helpful. Nice bar/pub as an integral part of the hotel.

The decor of the hotel is a bit dark and gloomy. Our room was tiny, but it was the last available room and we arrived quite late so I suppose we got the one that nobody else wanted!

The breakfast.Excellent choice although it would have been better if the kidneys had been available. Service was better than the evening, there seemed to be more staff on duty.

Evening restaurant service very poor. The wait between courses was unacceptable. I nearly had to give up on dessert and had to issue ultimatum to finally receive it. While I appreciate a room with character I would have thought a window should actually shut ours didn't fit the frame. I hope the chrysalis that was attached to the window has now developed into a beautiful moth or butterfly. The bar staff seemed to have so many other jobs they were not around when you needed a drink. When they finally appeared there was quite a queue.

The hotel was charming, and the room spacious and comfortable. All of the staff were friendly and helpful.

The bed was surprisingly small - it didn't seem to be a full size double bed

  • Couple

Hotel staff were very helpful any friendly. Breakfast was excellent and grounds were very well kept.

The room although quaint was in need of some TLC, the bathroom could do with being re-tiled as recent repairs made it look a bit shabby.

Not enough staff they were overworked, but managed to smile. The loo seat was broken.
